90% of patients face financial hardship

Meet the Heroes Among Us

Every day, brave patients battle blood cancers and other deadly blood disorders - a fight that's as much about spirit as it is about medicine.

These faces you see, these stories you read – they are real people with real dreams, each grappling with the unimaginable.

They are parents, children, family, friends and neighbours.

But what’s not visible is the significant emotional and financial burden it places on all those involved.

Did you know that 90% of all cancer patients face financial hardship?

So, let’s stand together with them so they know they are not alone in this fight– because every moment and every dollar counts in their urgent battle for life.

Please consider extending a lifeline through the Gift a Patient program

Here are their stories

P.S.

P.S. is a 55 year old leukemia survivor who underwent a stem cell transplant but her challenges go far beyond her health.

She lives with her 18-year-old daughter and faces emotional and physical abuse from her husband. He uses her illness as a control tactic, withholding money for essential medications and abandoning her when she relies on him for transportation to medical appointments.
P.S. is awaiting priority housing.
Despite her limited resources, she dreams of creating a special holiday for her daughter complete with a gift and a memorable Christmas dinner.

With your support through our Gift-a-Patient (GAP) program, we can help P.S. and her daughter find hope and joy this holiday season.

K.L.

K.L. is 24 and has fought severe aplastic anemia since his teenage years.
Earlier this year, his condition deteriorated to the point where a stem cell transplant was his only chance of survival.

Thankfully, his younger brother was a match. Though the transplant gave him hope, recovery has been a long and lonely journey.

K.L. had to pause his studies in sports business management and leave his basketball team, two things that brought him great joy.

Financial challenges, including transportation costs for medical appointments, add to his stress.
A gift this holiday season would remind K.L. that his community stands behind him cheering him on to return to the basketball court soon.

With your support through our Gift-a-Patient (GAP) program, we can show K.L. that he is not alone and help lighten his financial burden as he continues to heal.

A. P

A.P. is a young leukemia survivor who underwent a stem cell transplant over a decade ago.

Despite the years that have passed, financial hardship continues to overshadow her life.

Living on ODSP, she struggles to cover even basic needs, with no room for small comforts like a manicure or massage.
But A.P. has found a way to give back. This year, she began volunteering weekly for the Kids Helpline, providing support to others despite her own chronic pain, unstable health and depression.

Her selflessness and resilience inspire everyone around her. This holiday season, a Gift-a-Patient (GAP) donation would let her know her community recognizes and supports her incredible strength.

With your support through the (GAP) program, we can brighten A.P.’s holiday season and celebrate her generousity of spirit.

G.L.

G.L is a 66-year-old former machine operator fighting myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS). He has four (4) adult children.

Since his stem cell transplant in August, he has endured numerous complications and long hospital stays, requiring constant care from his wife, who has had to take unpaid leave from her job cleaning animal cages at a lab.
The financial strain on their family is immense, compounded by the emotional and physical toll of his illness.

A gift this holiday season would help relieve some of their financial burden, offering G.L and his wife much-needed relief during a difficult time.

With your support through our Gift-a-Patient (GAP) program, we can help Gus and his family find comfort and hope this holiday season.
